3 Things I've Learned About Law of Attraction

We live in an attractive universe. And by attractive, I mean that what we focus on expands, and is thereby attracted into our physical reality. It doesn’t matter if it’s something you want to focus on or not; the subject is irrelevant. Keeping your thoughts and focus on any one topic, over time, will bring it one step closer into existence. There are countless books, articles, blogs and online videos describing the benefits of law of attraction, including a Netflix movie called The Secret, based on a best-selling book. So what exactly is the ‘law of attraction,’ and how does it affect you?

You have an emotional guidance system

In understanding the 'universal laws' according to Abraham Hicks, in which the law of attraction is but 1 of 3, it's important to recognize your emotional guidance system, or your ability to observe the translation of thought into emotion. For example, when a thought crosses your mind, oftentimes you experience an emotional response on some level, whether it be positive or negative. Some thoughts bring you ‘good’ feelings and some thoughts bring ‘bad’ feelings. So what happens when you focus on a thought? It expands; pure and simple. It’s like getting a song stuck in your head that you can’t get out. You try.. and try.. to STOP thinking about it, not realizing that in an attractive universe, you are only focusing even MORE attention on the song through your attempts.

“Your emotions are your physical indication of your relationship with your Inner Being.”

-Abraham Hicks

Thoughts, and the amount of focus you choose to place behind them, are better handled by focusing attention on another topic. Many of us have heard the ‘law of the conservation of mass,’ which states that matter (or mass) is never created or destroyed; only transferred. This is very similar to the law of attraction, which states that you cannot STOP the momentum of a thought. Rather than trying to stop the thought, or reverse direction, simply focus on a NEW thought. The moment you recognize that your emotions are in a funk, and that you desire to turn things around, shift your thoughts and attention towards thoughts that elicit positive emotion. At first, it may seem difficult to overcome the momentum behind the negative thoughts, and to turn your attention elsewhere. However, this is a skill that can be practiced, and learning to shift your thoughts (and thereby your feelings) is a valuable life skill.

A belief is just a thought you keep thinking

Abraham Hicks defines belief as ‘a thought that you just keep thinking.’ This means that the primary subject of your thoughts, when you continually focus upon it, will become a staple in your belief system. If you consistently watch news and read stories about violent crimes, you are establishing a belief system in which violent crimes are a regular and accepted part of life. This is not the same thing as ignoring a problem, or claiming that something does not exist when it obviously does. If you are ‘ignoring a problem,’ you are in fact acknowledging that a problem exists in the first place. If no problem ever existed, there would be nothing to ignore. However, when you maintain focus on positive thoughts and feelings, and choose only to accept the positive things in life as reality, then those things will expand instead.

You create your own reality based on whatever criteria you see fit. Many people take the “I’ll believe it when I see it” approach, while others establish their fundamental beliefs solely on faith. The world was once considered flat (and then round and then flat again) until something gave them reason to believe otherwise, i.e. visual discovery of a new continent. The scientific realm is full of examples of belief structures that changed overnight simply with one piece of visual, ‘concrete’ evidence. And while visible evidence and direct observation are indeed fantastic methods of observation, they are not the only impetus that drives creation. Actual creation requires only the belief, expectation and acceptance of the thoughts you choose to entertain.

Searching for the expansive

Understanding the point

So what is the point of all of this? If there actually is an answer to life’s great question… then what is it?!? How do we measure whether or not our actions are resulting in actual ‘success?’ According to Abraham Hicks and the law of attraction:

“The achievement of anything that you desire must be considered a success, whether it is a trophy, money, relationships, or things.”

In other words, the very nature of you acting upon your thoughts, actions and beliefs which then result in positive emotion, IS the point. No one else can control your emotional state of well being. Maybe you can be coerced, convinced or otherwise deterred from your source energy’s corresponding beliefs, however, YOU are the only person in this current time and space that can affect actual change in your belief system. When you choose to focus on the positive things in life… the things that make you feel ‘good’... then you will see them expand. Similarly, focusing on things that bring about ‘bad’ feelings will also expand. If you are searching for an ultimate answer, look no further than your own happiness and well being. The point of life is to experience life, and to create a reality of your own choosing utilizing your emotional guidance system.
